Busy, Beware

Jun 28, 2017

In 2017, nearly everything is automated. Doors open and close without hands to hold them, e-commerce websites make money without people to sell products, and algorithms show us what we want to see without us having to say it out loud. Welcome to the future.

The upside of all this technology should be more free time. Now that we don’t have to do so many little things – flip light switches, use actual keys on our cars, even dial phone numbers – you’d think all the humans would be on a beach somewhere, living it up at the expense of the robots.

techark-stressedNope. We’re more stressed and busy than ever.

There was a time when the word “busy” was tossed about light-heartedly; a word that you sighed wearily but good-naturedly when asked. That time is gone, and now we hurl the word viciously, an aggressive defense against further questioning. Don’t talk to me anymore, I’m busy.

But are we really busier? Or are we just more stressed?

Everyone is busy – it’s not novel, it’s part of life. We’re all busy with work, home, family, school, pets, chores, cooking…the list goes on. However, you may be surprised to find that, when broken apart and analyzed, so much of that time is so often wasted.

We are so focused on being busy that we forget to be productive. Yes, there is a difference.

Busy does not translate to productive. “Busywork” is so-called because it keeps people occupied, but has no real purpose, no definable result. When you’re busy in your day-to-day routine, how productive are you?

In order to close the gap between busy and productive, we must first examine where exactly the disconnect is occurring. It’s not always the fault of the busy person. When faced with archaic processes, redundant systems, and futile tasks, everyone’s productivity level declines sharply. Once you’ve determined the problem, you can find the solution.
