Our Approach to Accessibility

Our team has continued to improve how we incorporate accessibility into website development. We recognize that accessibility is not a final check before launch, but an important part of how we design, build, and test websites.

Designing and Developing Accessible Websites

Accessibility begins before a website is built. During development, our teams work to implement these decisions correctly. We use semantic HTML, maintain a clear heading structure, support keyboard interaction, manage focus appropriately, and make forms and interactive elements easier to understand and use.

During the design process, we consider factors such as:

  • Clear visual and content hierarchy
  • Appropriate color contrast
  • Readable type sizing and spacing
  • Consistent navigation patterns
  • Visible focus indicators
  • Distinct interactive states

How We Test Websites for Accessibility

We use a combination of automated and manual testing to identify accessibility issues.

Depending on the project, our testing may include tools such as Axe, WAVE, and Lighthouse. We also manually review areas such as keyboard navigation, focus behavior, semantic structure, and screen-reader compatibility.

Automated tools can identify many common accessibility issues, but they cannot reveal everything about a website’s accessibility. Manual testing is therefore an important part of our process.

Our Approach to WCAG 2.2 Level AA Conformance

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) provide recommendations for making websites more accessible to people with disabilities. WCAG has three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA.

For projects where accessibility compliance is part of the agreed scope, we use WCAG 2.2 Level AA as our target.

Every website is unique, and accessibility can vary based on a site’s content, functionality, technology, third-party services, and specific project requirements. Client-managed content and changes made after launch can also affect accessibility.

We therefore evaluate accessibility on a project-by-project basis rather than assuming that every website automatically meets every applicable WCAG 2.2 Level AA requirement.

Ongoing Accessibility Support

Accessibility doesn’t stop when a website goes live.

New pages, images, documents, plugins, forms, integrations, and other changes can introduce accessibility issues over time. We encourage our clients to keep accessibility in mind when updating their websites and adding new content.

For clients who require ongoing accessibility support, we can provide additional testing, audits, remediation, and monitoring as part of an ongoing engagement.

Third-Party Services

Many websites use third-party tools and services, including plugins, forms, CAPTCHA, maps, video players, payment systems, and embedded applications.

We do our best to select and implement accessible solutions, but some aspects of third-party functionality are outside our direct control.

When we identify an accessibility issue with a third-party service, we review the available options and work with our clients to determine the most appropriate solution.

Creating and Maintaining Accessible Website Content

Good accessibility isn’t only about the code behind a website. Content also plays an important role.

Images need meaningful alternative text when appropriate, headings need to be structured correctly, and links should make sense in context. Documents, videos, tables, and forms should also be considered from an accessibility perspective.

We provide guidance to our clients when needed and encourage accessible content practices as part of ongoing website management.

Accessibility is an ongoing part of our work at TechArk.
