No matter who you plan to vote for in the Presidential Election in November, there are some very important Internet marketing lessons we can all learn from watching the campaigns. These same lessons can be modified for each of our own businesses to help us all come out on top every time when it comes to our customers and clients. Here are five of the top things we’ve learned:
1. Lead or get out of the way. Finding the right message to promote your business can either make or break you when it comes to your competition. As it is in any election, leaders emerge on both political platforms and eventually someone comes out on top because people like what they are saying. Make sure you’re saying what your customers want to hear.
2. Your followers are influential. If your customers like what you’re saying and you can make good on your promises, they will help to spread the word about you to their friends and family. On the flip side, if you can’t deliver what you promise, that word will also spread.
3. Good reviews are like movie stars. When it comes to politics, people can often be “lured” to a candidate based on the famous and influential people who endorse them. For your business, good reviews are like movie stars—the more you have, the better people will view your company. If you receive bad reviews, rectify them immediately and turn a negative into a positive.
4. It takes time to get noticed. Unless you’re Arnold Schwarzenegger, most people aren’t going to recognize your business until you build your brand and market it smartly. Use a variety of channels to reach your targets and don’t be afraid to experiment with different ideas.
5. Learn from your mistakes. Honesty is the best policy when it comes to earning the trust of your “constituents.” If you make a mistake, admit it, fix it, learn from it, and move on.
One last lesson: political candidates don’t go it alone when it comes to campaigns. They have campaign managers who help them make good decisions and execute them flawlessly.
